These fictional cases ask you to reason from evidence. For each one, write your answer before opening the model response. The examples use classroom or documented training situations; they do not prescribe a repair for an unidentified live system.
A repeatable way to think
- Observe: write what is actually known and under which conditions.
- Separate: distinguish reported history, direct observations, and assumptions.
- Compare: identify at least two possible explanations when the evidence allows them.
- Choose: propose a check that would distinguish those explanations.
- Review: state what the result supports and what it still does not prove.
Case 01. A latch works with the door open
On an authorized classroom opening, the latch operates smoothly while the door is open. With the door closed, the handle needs extra force. A learner immediately recommends a new cylinder.
Write three observations you would want to record. Name two explanations other than cylinder failure, and choose a next check that does not alter the hardware.
Compare with the model answer
The change between open and closed conditions points toward the interaction of the door, latch, strike, and frame. Possible explanations include alignment or pressure at the strike, but this is not a diagnosis by itself. Record gaps, visible contact marks, and the exact operating condition. Compare the opening against the correct hardware instructions with the instructor. Replacing or rekeying a cylinder has not yet been justified.
Case 02. Two keys with the same head
A customer brings a working mechanical key and a blank with the same head shape. The label on the blank is missing. Another trainee says that the matching heads settle the identification question.
List the additional evidence needed before the blank is accepted. Explain why duplicating from an already poor copy can complicate quality control.
Compare with the model answer
Head shape is branding or packaging evidence, not a full profile and dimensional match. Identify the blank through the appropriate catalog, keyway/profile, reference stop, length, and intended application. The original key’s condition matters because an inaccurate or worn source can reproduce its defects. Use the shop’s approved identification and duplication process; do not treat trial insertion or head shape as the entire decision.
Case 03. The new fob has the same buttons
Two remote housings look identical and have matching button labels. The seller lists a broad vehicle-year range. The learner has not recorded the original part number or checked the vehicle market.
Separate evidence already available from missing evidence. Write a customer-facing explanation for why the part is not yet confirmed.
Compare with the model answer
Available evidence is limited to appearance and a seller’s claim. The vehicle’s exact application, documented part reference, electronic requirements, and the supplier’s current fitment information still need confirmation. A suitable explanation is: “The housing matches, but I still need to verify the electronics and application before confirming this part.” It is premature to promise that programming will solve a compatibility mismatch.
Case 04. Remote buttons work; the vehicle will not start
A fob locks and unlocks the doors. The vehicle does not start. Someone concludes that the key must be correctly enrolled because the buttons work.
Build a four-column matrix for mechanical access, remote buttons, passive access where fitted, and starting. Which result is known, and which diagnosis is still unsupported?
Compare with the model answer
Remote locking is the known working function. It does not prove every other key function or establish the cause of the no-start condition. Record the remaining results, vehicle messages, circumstances, and relevant diagnostic evidence through the applicable process. A no-start complaint can have causes outside the key system. The next step is a structured diagnosis, not repeated programming based only on the remote result.
Case 05. A measurement without context
A training log says only “battery: 12.4.” It does not identify the units, measurement points, load state, instrument, or time. The writer concludes that power conditions will remain suitable for a programming procedure.
Rewrite the measurement record with fields for missing information. Explain why the conclusion is too strong without inventing a universal passing threshold.
Compare with the model answer
A useful record states what was measured, the units, the reference points, the instrument/mode, and the operating conditions. One static reading does not establish future voltage stability or the battery’s response under load. The required preconditions and power-support settings come from the applicable vehicle and equipment procedure. Mark unknown fields as missing rather than filling them with guessed values.
Case 06. The scanner reports success
A supervised add-key exercise ends with a success message on the tool. The new key starts the vehicle, but no one has checked the original key or other agreed functions.
Write a completion checklist based on the agreed scope. Distinguish the tool’s reported result from the evidence needed at handover.
Compare with the model answer
Record the tool result, then check the key functions included in the procedure and agreement. The key inventory and expected behavior of existing keys matter as well. Document any remaining faults or limitations and explain them clearly. The exact checks are application-specific; an electronic success message is one piece of evidence, not a substitute for the full agreed functional result.
Case 07. A badge is lost at a small office
A fictional office uses electronic credentials for the main entry and mechanical keys for storage rooms. One employee loses both a badge and a key. A manager asks to disable the badge and assumes the problem is fully resolved.
Describe the two access systems involved. List the questions needed to decide how the lost mechanical key should be handled.
Compare with the model answer
Revoking an electronic credential addresses that credential’s permissions. It does not change a mechanical cylinder. Determine which doors the lost key could operate, what other keys share that access, who can authorize a change, and what the organization’s key-control policy requires. Document the incident and the approved response separately for each system. Avoid assuming that every lost key requires the same scope of work.
Case 08. A course advertises certification
Two courses use the word “certified.” One awards a completion document; the other includes an external assessment. Neither description explains whether it satisfies the applicant’s local licensing requirements.
Draft five questions to send to each provider. Explain which questions belong with the government agency instead.
Compare with the model answer
Ask who issues the credential, what is assessed, how much hands-on work is observed, which examinations are included, and what additional fees or prerequisites apply. Confirm any claim about legal eligibility with the responsible agency, including the difference between an employee role and operating a business. A provider’s description is useful evidence to investigate, not a replacement for the agency’s requirements.

Judge the reasoning, not the confidence.
A good answer identifies the evidence, names what is still unknown, and chooses a check that reduces uncertainty. “Replace the part” and “try programming it again” are actions, but they are not explanations. Give yourself credit for recognizing that the available evidence is insufficient.
These exercises evaluate understanding. Completing them does not certify practical competence or replace supervised assessment.
